כל עבודה מדעית מסתמכת על מקורות מידע שונים: ספרים, מאמרים (מתוך כתבי-עת או ספרים ), אתרי אינטרנט ועוד.
נתוני המקורות (שם המחבר ו/או עורך, כותר (שם הספר או מאמר), מקום ההוצאה לאור, שם ההוצאה לאור, תאריך פרסום - מהווים רישום ביבליוגרפי. רישומים ביבליוגרפיים יש לחבר ברשימה ביבליוגרפית של מקורות מידע, הממוקמת בסוף העבודה.
רישום ביבליוגרפי חייב להיות בשפת הכתיבה של המקור.
רישומים ברשימה ביבליוגרפית מסודרים לפי סדר א"ב של שמות משפחה של המחברים, מלבד רישומים בשיטת IEEE, שלפיה הרישומים מסודרים לפי סדר אזכורם בטקסט, עם מספור רץ בסוגריים מרובעים.
אם העבודה נכתבת בעברית הרישומים הראשונים יהיו רישומים ביבליוגרפיים של המקורות שנכתבו בעברית ואחריהם כל הרישומים בשפות אחרות.
ישנן שיטות רבות לרישום פריטים ביבליוגרפיים, להלן כמה מהן:

Modern Language Association) MLA) - אנגלית ומדעי הרוח
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) IEEE) - הנדסה
כל שיטה תוכל להיות טובה, בתנאי שתישמר בעקביות לאורך כל העבודה.
